    Foreign coins deserve identification

A box of world coins can contain everyday travel change alongside collectible pieces. Country, denomination, date, metal and variety help determine what deserves a closer look. Ancient coins, tokens and medals require their own identification rather than a comparison to modern circulating coins.

    What we examine

We look at the design, inscriptions, weight where useful, condition and signs affecting authenticity. For ancient coins, attribution and what remains visible on the design can be important. For tokens and medals, the issuer, subject, event and collector demand may matter more than a face value.

Do not sort by color alone

A silver appearance does not establish silver content, and a gold-colored item is not necessarily gold. Mixed foreign holdings should be screened before assuming that everything belongs in one bulk lot. Keep pieces with unusual holders or collector notes separate enough to be noticed.

    Preserve records and provenance

Keep auction descriptions, invoices and previous collector notes with the relevant item. These can help with identification and the history of a piece. We do not advise cleaning ancient coins or removing surface deposits before a review. Leave unfamiliar items as found so their surfaces and details can be assessed.

    What makes a useful photograph?

Photograph both sides straight on, with enough detail to read the inscriptions. A size reference and the holder label can help. If the collection contains hundreds of loose coins, start with overall photos and selected closeups; you do not need to photograph every common piece before calling.

    Discuss the collection first

Call 945-268-7193 and describe whether you have travel change, albums, certified world coins or ancient material. We can plan a review at our Richardson location and explain how the items contribute to a purchase offer. You can choose to sell selected pieces or discuss the collection as a whole.
