What to know before selling sterling flatware and silver objects: marks, weighted pieces, condition and precious-metal evaluation.

Start by separating types of silver objects

Flatware, serving pieces, bowls and broken jewelry may all belong in a silver review, but they are not necessarily made the same way. Solid sterling, silver plate and weighted objects require different treatment. Keep a complete set together until it has been examined.

Marks help, but they are not the entire test

A sterling or purity mark can guide identification. Maker marks, patterns and construction can provide additional clues. Worn or unfamiliar marks should be inspected rather than treated as proof of a particular metal content. Send a closeup of the marks and an overall photo of the object before visiting.

Why total object weight can be misleading

Some objects contain non-silver parts or weighting material. A purchase evaluation needs to account for construction rather than multiplying the entire object’s weight by a metal price. Knives and other composite pieces may require a different calculation from solid flatware.

    Scrap value and resale value

A usable or collectible pattern, complete service or recognized maker may deserve consideration beyond a metal-only calculation. Damage, missing pieces and demand can also matter. We review the objects and explain whether the offer is primarily based on precious-metal content or a resale market.

Leave cleaning and disassembly until after review

You do not need to polish tarnish away before calling. Avoid dismantling weighted pieces or separating sets to make a scrap pile. Bring boxes, pattern information and any item list that already exists. Broken and mismatched pieces can be included in the discussion.

    Arrange your silver review
