Keep paper money separate from loose coins
An estate or coin collection may also contain banknotes, older U.S. currency and world notes. Store them flat in their existing protective holders when possible. Loose coins and sharp objects can damage paper, so keep mixed material separated during transport.
Identification comes before valuation
Issuer, denomination, series, signatures and other identifying details help establish which note is being reviewed. A familiar portrait does not make all notes interchangeable. Serial numbers and printing characteristics may merit attention, but an unusual-looking number alone does not establish a premium.
Condition and originality matter
Folds, tears, stains, repairs and missing portions can affect a note’s appeal. Do not iron, tape, wash or press paper money to improve its appearance before an evaluation. A note should be reviewed in its current state, with any known alterations disclosed.
Retain the collector’s records
Keep envelopes, purchase receipts and previous descriptions with the notes they belong to. Labels can provide useful starting information even if a past valuation no longer reflects the market. Professionally graded notes should remain in their holders.
Send readable photos
Photograph the full front and back in even light. Add a closeup of the holder label if the note is certified, but do not crop away the edges or margins. An overview showing the quantity and type of collection helps us plan whether a detailed in-person review is needed.
Discuss your notes before visiting
