Gold items need more than a scale

Gold coins, bars and rounds can differ in purity, fine-gold weight, authenticity and market demand. A familiar design or stamped weight is a starting point for examination, not a substitute for it. Keep branded packaging and assay cards with the items when available.

    Gross weight versus fine-gold content

The total weight of an item is not always its fine-gold weight. Alloy coins contain other metals as well as gold. We identify the issue or test the material as appropriate, then consider the actual gold content. Be sure weight units are clear when comparing any quotation.

A collectible coin may carry a premium

Some gold coins trade primarily around their metal content, while others have collector value associated with date, mintmark, condition or scarcity. An older coin should be reviewed as a coin before being treated as ordinary scrap. Leave certified coins in their holders.

Why an offer can differ from a spot-price calculation

Spot is a reference for the metal market. A purchase offer can also reflect the item’s form, authenticity, liquidity, resale premium and handling costs. A formula based on metal alone cannot tell you the complete value of every coin or bar. Ask what weight and purity are being used and how the offer was calculated.

    Bring the right information

Group matching bars and coins, retain receipts if you have them, and avoid polishing the surfaces. A clear photo of the front, back and assay card helps us understand the material before a visit. Do not post details about where valuable items are stored publicly.

Call before transporting a large holding

Contact Dallas Coins & Collectibles Store at 945-268-7193 to discuss what you have and plan a visit to Richardson. We evaluate the items and explain an offer based on the material and market at the time of review. You decide whether to accept.
